Travel Diaries:  To Portugal We Go!

An undisputed destination, that's become top trending on all of social media is the Algarve region of Portugal. A picturesque place that is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. With its rock formations and other-wordly cliffs, this beautiful coastline boasts stunning natural beauty that leaves you wanting to return for more!

V1. Lagos

The Algarve is home to some of the most beautiful and tourist-friendly beaches on the southern coastline of Portugal. Blessed with a glorious climate, quant fishing villages and a thriving tourist sprawl. A great place for thrill seekers and families alike, Lagos and the surrounding has something for everyone - a buzzing nightlife, waterparks, historic buildings and tranquil nature reserves.

WHERE TO STAY?
Casa Mae

Casa Mãe is a property with a lot of heritage, the gardens are bordered by the 16th century antique walls, it is located in the historic part of Lagos, 5 minutes from the main beaches.

The hotel itself was an abandoned estate that the owner meticulously renovated, maintaining much of the original exterior designs and staying true to the modern Portuguese aesthetic. Do not miss out on breakfast! They have a great menu featuring local produce and fish, and all of the ingredients are incredibly fresh. The gift shop, called Lola, features items by several up-and-coming Portuguese designers.

"They have beautiful gardens throughout that farm all the fruits and vegetables for their restaurants, including their chickens! " - Jenny, Koy Travel Expert

WHAT TO DO
Lagos Town: "Lagos is a really cute town filled with all kinds of unique shops and restaurants".

There is much to love about this town, with its rocky Atlantic beaches and dramatic ocean cliffs.

You can:

  • Visit the historic town center, which is home to many charming streets and squares, as well as several churches and other historic buildings
  • Walk along the city's waterfront and take in the views of the Atlantic Ocean
  • Explore the Lagos Marina, where you can see a variety of boats and yachts
  • Visit the Lagos Cultural Center, which hosts a variety of cultural events and exhibitions
  • Take a boat tour to see the cliffs and caves along the coast, including the famous grotto of Ponta de Piedade
  • Go to the beach, such as Meia Praia and Batata Beach, and enjoy the sun and sea
  • Take a day trip to nearby towns such as Portimão and Albufeira

It's also a perfect location for a surf and beach holiday, With many surf schools and beach activities like parasailing, jet skiing, and paddleboarding

WHAT TO SEE

Where-ever you find yourself in this beautiful city, you will always find something unique and delicious to eat and drink. There were too many good spots to name but there are certainly some GEMS to visit.

The Forte da Bandeira, also known as Fort of the Flag, is a historic fortification located in the city of Lagos, Portugal. It was built in the 16th century to protect the city from pirate attacks and invasion. The fort is located on a hill overlooking the city and the Atlantic Ocean, and it offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. It's also a great location for a picnic, relaxing and enjoying the sunset.

Praia do Camilo is a popular beach, known for its unique and picturesque setting. The beach is located in a small cove, surrounded by high cliffs and lush vegetation, which makes it a very scenic and secluded spot. The beach is only accessible by a steep stairway, which adds to its charm and exclusivity. Why we love it? Imagine diving off rugged cliffs and swimming in clean, crystal-clear waters with fine golden sand - all sheltered from the wind with an element of seclusion. What dreams are made of.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK

Travia is a local favorite; with tapas staples and dishes inspired by the local offerings - with a delicious selection of local wines to compliment the fresh Mediterranean/ Portuguese menu.

Another amazing restaurant that our staff LOVED is O Camilo - a beautiful, modern space inspired by sophisticated architecture and design with a menu based on the same principles of its origin, quality and traditional recipes. Be sure to book 2 weeks in advance as they are quite popular with their seafood!
